Submissions

We’re looking for great reporting and engaging storytelling that gives readers insight into farming and food systems around the globe, with a particular focus on North America. We’re especially interested in stories that explore agriculture and food production against the backdrop of climate and sustainability, social inequality, and food security—but we’re always interested in creative and resourceful ideas that fall outside those areas.

We’re open to many formats, from reported features to personal essays to multimedia storytelling. If you’ve got a story you think would be a fit, we want to hear from you!

Submit a pitch

To submit a pitch, please email us at pitches{at}modfarmer.com and include the following information: 

• Who are you? Tell us a bit about yourself and your experience.
• What is the story you want to tell? Why is it important or interesting? If it’s particularly timely, tell us why! 
• What format do you think the story will take? Length, style, etc.
• How do you plan to report your story? Do you have sources lined up? If not, who do you plan to speak with?
• How long might it take you to submit the story if it’s assigned? 

Compensation

We pay writers based on story format and complexity, starting at a base rate of $350 USD.
